Tommy Fleetwood received a blunt response from his now-wife Clare when he first asked her out due to their significant age difference. The couple met in 2015 when Clare, who is 23 years older than Tommy, approached him about becoming his agent. When Tommy, then 33, initially asked her out, Clare, then 56, responded with a firm “Don’t be stupid” and turned him down several times, citing their age gap as the reason.
Clare explained to The Sun, “We’ve got a 23-year age difference. Of course, I turned him down. I was like, ‘Don’t be stupid’.” Despite the initial rejections, Tommy persisted, and Clare eventually agreed to date him while continuing to manage his career.
The couple married in 2017, and Tommy became a stepfather to Clare’s two children, Oscar and Mo, who are now 17 and 16, respectively. They also have a six-year-old son together named Frankie.
Tommy, who is currently ranked as the world number 13 golfer, has acknowledged that their age difference sometimes raises eyebrows. Nonetheless, he describes his family as very close-knit. On the Barstool Sports podcast, Fore Play, he shared, “The whole family – we’re unbelievably close. There’s Oscar and Mo and they are the two older ones, and then there’s Frankie.”
He elaborated on his family dynamic, saying, “Whenever people ask if I have kids and I say ’17, 16, and six’, I get the look. So, I explain that the first two are step-kids, but honestly, I never really think of them that way. I’ve been a parental figure to Mo since he was five, and I’m incredibly fortunate for the relationship we have. Our family time is our safe space, and I hope it always stays that way.”
