Tiger Woods’ two kids: All about Sam and Charlie
Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren’s two children spent their childhoods on the golf course.
The former couple married in the early 2000s and celebrated the birth of their first child, daughter Sam Alexis, in 2007. In 2009, the family grew even more with the birth of Charlie’s son, Axel.
When the children were still young, Woods was embroiled in scandal when reports emerged that he had cheated on her several times during his marriage. Wood and Nordegren filed for divorce in 2010, but despite some drama between the parents, the couple tried to keep Sam and Charlie’s best interests in mind.
“I love being with them and seeing what they’re doing, what they’re capable of, their changing joys and interests,” she said. It’s just fun. We have a great time together,” the pro golfer said in 2011. Woods and Nordegren’s first child, Sam Alexis Woods, was born in Orlando, Florida, on June 18, 2007. The couple chose a name with special meaning, as Woods’ father always referred to the golf superstar by the nickname “Sam” when he was little. \ “I wanted to have an important name on both sides of my family, my side, or the side of Erin. My father had always called me Sam since the day I was born. He rarely called me Tiger. “I said, ‘Why don’t you call me Tiger?’ and she said, ‘You look like Sam,'” the golfer explained.
Woods instilled a love of sports in his daughter from the start, revealing that he put a golf club in Sam’s hands when she was just a few weeks old, but “she couldn’t hold it yet.” At just six months old, Sam attended her father’s first golf tournament, and would go on to attend many more. After Woods and Nordegren split, the athlete later revealed that he had spoken openly about the situation with his young children, and while he didn’t tell them exactly what happened, he said he acknowledged he made mistakes.
\”I\’ve taken the initiative with the kids, and told them up front, \’Guys, the reason why we\’re not in the same house, why we don\’t live under the same roof, Mommy and Daddy, is because Daddy made some mistakes,\’ \” Woods told TIME magazine in 2015.
Following the divorce, the couple arranged to share custody of their two children, who split their time between their parents. Sam continued to support Woods from the sidelines as a series of setbacks and injuries stalled his career. The golfer explained that his kids started to resist practicing, telling him, ‘Dad, don’t try to play, don’t try to practice, you’ll hurt me more.'” Luckily, Woods’ career turned around in 2018, giving his kids their first chance to see Woods in his prime. “They felt the buzz in the gallery, people talking and excitement – they’d never seen that, experienced that or felt that. I think they remember this day and this moment, especially the process. Now they are starting to see the joy of receiving it from her, and I think they are really grateful for it from -s [this]. In 2021, Woods opened up about his daughter, saying she taught him to “be more patient.” Though she was already a teenager, he added that she was still his “little girl.”
Just a year later, Sam had the opportunity to pay tribute to his father as he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. During his acceptance speech, Sam mentioned the obstacles Woods had overcome, including a tragic car accident just a few months earlier. “I didn’t know if you’d be able to go home on your own two legs. Now, not only are you a Hall of Famer, but you’re here on your own two feet. That’s why you deserve it. You are a fighter, you challenged the chances each time, ”Sam said. In December 2023, Sam got the chance to caddie for her father for the first time when he played in the PNC Pro-Am Championship. But Woods said his daughter isn’t a fan of golf, despite her eagerness to spend time on the course with her dad.
“Golf took her dad away from her when she was growing up,” he explained on the “Today” show in May 2024. “I had to pack up and leave, and there were negative connotations because I was away for a few weeks.”
