Former Tiger Woods coach Hank Haney believes McIlroy’s decision to use a 7-iron off the tee on the 15th hole of the US Open was a mistake by his caddie Harry Diamond.

McIlroy was on his way to his first major in 10 years at Pinehurst last Sunday but blew a two-shot lead with five holes to play, handing the win to Bryson DeChambeau. The Northern Irishman’s quest for a fifth major tournament is one of the most talked about topics in the world of golf and last weekend’s collapse will hurt him more than ever.

McIlroy’s quest for another major golf title will continue, as will accusations that he lacks the courage to win majors again. McIlroy’s longtime friend and caddie, Harry Diamond, was criticized for his role in the collapse, with some suggesting McIlroy should find another caddie.

Haney, who spent six years as Tiger Woods’ coach in the 2000s and guided him to six major victories, weighed in on the decision to use a 7-iron instead of an 8-iron. Heini explained that Woods would never have made such a big mistake in the same circumstances.

\ “Rory made a bad decision here. The bad solution is that it sits between the clubs – 8-iron or 7-iron. He uses a 7-iron,” he said on his podcast. “Tiger Woods would never do that. Rory McIlroy can throw the ball straight up in the air just like Tiger can. On a hard brick green, you’ve got to get the ball in the air, you’ve got to hit a high shot, it’s got a punch, it’s got a downward trajectory, and you can’t come in anything less than perfect. There is no way to stop the ball in green.

\ “This is a bad decision. When you are nervous, you will vibrate badly and make a bad decision. \ ”
