Blocked from joining the board
Last month, The Telegraph reported that McIlroy had been blocked from returning to the PGA Tour’s policy board. He was keen for a deal to be brokered between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) and was hopeful that returning to the board would allow him to push for other stars not to be lured away to the lucrative project. However, his return was voted against.
After it emerged that Tiger Woods had voted in favour of McIlroy remaining off of the PGA Tour’s policy board, the latter publicly shut down speculation that a feud may be set to break out between the pair. He said: “I would say, I mean, I think friends can have disagreements or not see things – I guess not – not see eye to eye on things but have disagreements on things.
“I think that’s fine. But no, I wouldn’t say – we had a really good talk last Friday for 45 minutes just about a lot of different things. No, there’s no strain there. I think we might see the future of golf a little bit differently, but I don’t think that should place any strain on a relationship or on a friendship.”

After seven years of marriage, it emerged that McIlroy was set to divorce from Erica Stoll. However, the Northern Irishman then U-turned on the decision and ‘voluntarily dismissed’ his petition to split from his wife. He claimed that he had ‘resolved his differences’ with his partner and the pair had ‘realised’ that they wanted to remain as a family.
