Rory McIlroy and Erica Stoll pulled together as they spent the day with their three-year-old daughter Poppy. Less than 24 hours after his humiliating fall on the final hole of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, the golf star was spotted with his wife and adorable child on Monday in Juno Beach, Fla. The trio got together for a belated Father’s Day celebration at the Loggerhead Marine Life Center near his mega-$22 million Jupiter home. Both McIlroy and Stoll were wearing wedding rings for the outing, which came just days after the Northern Irishman abruptly abandoned plans to divorce his wife of seven years.
The blonde beauty looked casual in a beige T-shirt, jeans and slides, while the former world number one looked equally casual in a black shirt, grey shorts and baseball cap.
The pair smiled as Poppy walked between them, and McIlroy tenderly held her hand as they headed to their car. It was McIlroy’s first appearance since his heartbreaking defeat in his quest for a fifth major title.
Thirteen years after his first U.S. Open victory and his first major win at the Congressional, McIlroy looked like he’d finally be back in the championship game, leading by two strokes with five holes to go. But then, astonishingly, he missed par on the 16th by 2 feet 6 inches and on the 18th by less than 4 feet to allow Bryson DeChambeau to win his second U.S. Open title on a stunning final day in North Carolina.
It’s been a trying few weeks for McIlroy, who filed for divorce in May, serving the papers at Stoll’s family home. But less than a month later, he made a shocking U-turn amid reports that the couple were continuing to have secret meetings to save their marriage.
“Recently, there have been rumors circulating about my private life, which I regret. “It would be foolish to react to every rumour,” McIlroy told The Guardian last week.
“Over the past few weeks, Erica and I have realised that our best future is staying together as a family.” βFortunately, we have resolved our differences and are looking forward to a new beginning,β he added.
According to Irish publication RSVP Live, McIlroy and Stoll secretly met at their Florida mansion every weekend for four weeks for candid talks. Sources said the couple initially discussed how they would co-parent their 3-year-old daughter, Poppy, but that conversation ultimately led to them reuniting.
The former world No. 1 player, who has earned about $87 million in career PGA Tour earnings, first met at the 2012 Ryder Cup when Erica, a New York native, was working for the PGA of America.
