Tiger Woods has broken his silence after he stunned the golfing world by turning down the chance to captain Team USA at the next Ryder Cup.

82-time PGA Tour event victor has taken part in the Ryder Cups on eight occasions during his glittering career, with his most recent outing coming in 2018. However, despite being widely touted as the leading candidate to be named as Team USA skipper for Bethpage, that honour has instead gone to Keegan Bradley.

The latter was not picked by his predecessor Zach Johnson to represent his country in Rome last year, appearing at the Ryder Cup in 2012 and 2014 previously. Now, Woods has opened up on his decision to snub the opportunity to lead the charge for his country as they look to avenge the wounding loss at Marco Simone as captain in 2025.

Speaking via a statement which was released by the PGA of America, the 15-time major championships winner admitted: “With my new responsibilities to the TOUR and time commitments involved, I felt like I would not be able to commit the time to Team USA and the players required as a captain.”

Leaving the door open to potentially being named as skipper at another point in the future, he went on to clarify: “That does not mean I wouldn’t want to captain a team in the future. If and when I feel it is the right time, I will put my hat in the ring for this committee to decide.”

His decision came after he remained coy on the subject when asked about the progression of talks over becoming Team USA captain while he was at the PGA Championship in May. He said: “We’re still talking. There’s nothing that has been confirmed yet. We’re still working on what that might look like. Also whether or not I have the time to do it.”

“I’m dedicating so much time to what we’re doing with the PGA Tour, I don’t want to not fulfil the role of the captaincy if I can’t do it,” he continued in a prophetic assertion. “What that all entails and representing Team USA and the commitments to the PGA of America, the players, and the fans and as I said, all of Team USA. I need to feel that I can give the amount of time that it deserves.”

Meanwhile, newly-installed skipper Bradley spoke with confidence as he looked forward to taking on the role at Bethpage next year. Making a vow over his intended approach to the post, he said: “I’m going to have the 12 best players on the team. I don’t care where they play.

“We have a mission to win this tournament and I don’t care about the LIV stuff. I want the best players on the team. By the time we get to Bethpage in 2025, we don’t know how things are going to look. As it comes to going to LIV events, if there’s guys that are on the fringe, I’m willing to do that. My biggest concern is having the best players on the team.”

The American added: “Again, I think in 2025, by the time the Ryder Cup comes, maybe the golf world looks totally different. I just want the best players on the team. I think it’s silly for the U.S. team to not have the best players.”
