Golf is a family affair for Tiger Woods, and now he’s apparently also doing something else: playing the USGA Championship. On Wednesday night, Charlie Woods, the 15-time major champion’s 15-year-old son, became the second member of the Woods family to qualify for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. The younger Woods shot a 71 in the qualifying tournament at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla., to earn medalist honors and claim one of 264 spots in the junior competition’s most prestigious championship. Woods overcame a bogey-double start in qualifying with five birdies over his final 16 holes to take first place in the qualifying standings by one shot, according to the USGA.
“I didn’t play my first two holes very well, but I played the last 16 holes very well,” the younger Woods said Wednesday. “I just told myself not to make any more bogeys or doubles and took advantage of some nice bird shots when I had them. Putting was my biggest strength today. He made a lot of putts when he needed them.
Tiger’s only son achieved a cult-level of fame among golf fans in the years since his debut at the PNC Father-Son Championship. As his junior golf career continued to unfold in South Florida, that fame only grew, but it also changed. After a stunning beginning (and the terrible Tiger Sec), Charlie attracted his game in front of him in golf.
“I hesitate him and trust him in my game,” said Tiger last week. “He’s seen it more than anybody in the world. He’s seen me hit more golf balls than anybody in the world.” I tell him what to look for, especially with my putting. He gave me some little details today, which was great, because I’m so focused on hitting certain putts on certain pins that I tend to forget some of the things I’m working on.
At the very least, the US Junior Amateur serves as a reminder that the younger Woods’ competitive career continues. Charlie has had several unsuccessful opportunities to compete in recent months, including a failed attempt to qualify for Monday’s PGA Tour event in his hometown, the Cowlant Classic. Late last year, his high school coach, Toby Harbeck, spoke about his development as a player. “There are some pins you don’t want to search for, but he goes after everything. If we can break him down a little bit, he’ll be a better player,” Hrbek said, but … “He can drop 300-plus bombs in the blink of an eye.” He has another meal, so it’s good, it’s a good light swing, sometimes he puts it as a super director, and he can simply fly.
Currently, the main precautions are moving around the Old Hills Cloud Club in Michigan. There, the young forest plays for young lovers in the United States. Woods’ performance is a great deal of attention during his first major event, and he says this is a way he likes it.
