Tiger Woods’ original agent, Hughes Norton, has opened up about the “worst” part of his relationship with the golf legend, who he hasn’t spoken to since being fired. Tiger Woods’ first agent, Hughes Norton, has revealed the “worst” part of his relationship with the golf legend.
Hughes hasn’t spoken to the 15-time major winner since he was fired, but he did have some critical words for Woods’ social skills. Hughes represented Woods for two years, beginning in the summer of 1996 when the golfer turned professional at just 20 years old. He first met Woods and his father, Earl, seven years ago, when Earl was hired by IMG as an associate talent scout. The super-agent has worked with many of golf’s greats, including LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman, who represented him for 11 years. Hughes negotiated Woods’ record endorsement deal early in their relationship but never worked with him again after he was fired, and IMG soon followed suit. Woods remained with the sports agency and was represented by current agent Mark Steinberg, while Hughes was asked to remain silent for 10 years as part of a large payment and was barred from competing with the firm. He never returned to the job, but he shared his experiences in his recently published memoir, \”The Rainmaker.\”
Hughes choked up as he recalled his breakup with Woods. “Honestly, the worst part was there was no explanation,” Norton told Today’s Golfer. “We wonder how Tiger broke up with the people in his life: his cadet, his girlfriend, his manager. I want to sit down with Tiger today and say, “Flashback to 25 years ago, what was the reason behind that?
“You never gave me the slightest indication that anything was wrong or that you weren’t happy. Before commenting later, it leads to my betrayal feeling.
The fuse was added as follows. “Tiger was incredibly selfless. From a young age he was focused on one thing: becoming the greatest golfer in the history of the sport. He was completely selfish. Only his needs were counted. “He had a total lack of empathy because he never learned how to relate to people.”
A former agent confirmed as much, recalling how “Tiger just stood there emotionless like a zombie” while delivering the news, the last time the two spoke. Hughes also believes Woods was clumsy, having gone from amateur to Masters champion to world number one in 12 months. “The fame irritated Tiger,” he recalls. “It really happened. It was an intrusion into his life. Hughes recalls a moment that underscored this point: “At one point he said, ‘Look, I’ve got $40 million from Nike and $20 million from Titleist, and that’s just money, Hughes.’
“He received his championship check for a tournament he’d just won and said, ‘Look, this $300,000 I won in Las Vegas is real to me.'” Everything else is just paper money. It’s an interesting perspective, but it also shows how limiting it is.”
