Tiger Woods says he suffered a sleepless flight to the Open after watching coverage of Donald Trump’s assassination attempt. The 48-year-old golfer flew in from Florida on Saturday for the 152nd edition of the major in Scotland this week, but was tired for his first practice round at Royal Troon on Sunday after closely following developments at the former’s gathering president in Pennsylvania.

“It’s an assassination attempt) and that’s all we saw the whole time along the way. I couldn’t sleep at all on the plane, and ended up on the golf course.

Woods, who is the 15th major champion, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Trump, who was killed and two seriously injured in a shooting in 2019, just after his return to the Masters.

Trump and Woods, both avid golfers, have a long history together, and the two have played many rounds together over the years. Asked about his purported friendly relationship with the then-president in 2018, Woods replied: “Well, he’s the president of the United States.”

“No matter who is in the office, you may like, dislike personality or the politics, but we all must respect the office,” he added, according to Yahoo Sports.

Woods teed off Thursday in pursuit of a fourth Open Championship victory on Thursday, having lifted the Claret Jug in 2000, 2005 and 2006. Considering the permanent wooden battle of rehabilitation with injuries in the 2021 car accident, it will be a shocking victory in his 23rd performance for his major.

The 82 winners of the PGA tour survived the difficult season, finished 60th in Masters, skipped the reduction of PGA and US Open Championship. Nonetheless, Woods remains adamant about playing as long as he feels he can win, and rejected a suggestion from former world number two Colin Montgomerie that he should consider retiring.

“As a former champion, I’m exempt until I’m 60,” he said. That’s not the case with Colin,” Woods told reporters on Tuesday, referring to the fact that he earned automatic qualification for the major thanks to his past victories at the event.

“He’s not a former champion, so he’s not exempt. So he doesn’t get the opportunity to make that decision. I do.”
