Trump was particularly interested in whether DeChambeau felt “nervous” during his four-foot putt on the last hole, to which the golfer admitted he was “super nervous.” Trump empathised, pointing out that after witnessing McIlroy’s shorter missed putt, nerves were justified.

Trump expressed that had DeChambeau also missed, it would have been a “tragic” blow to his reputation, making the point that he would have faced “cruel” comments from critics in the aftermath of the drama, which left Rory McIlroy to deal with more major agony.

“They’re cruel,” Trump said. “Some guy that’s 150 pounds overweight, he would have said, ‘He’s a choker, he can’t play.'”.

Nonetheless, DeChambeau nailed the shot, which Trump described as “perfect” DeChambeau reminisced with Trump, saying: “I stroke it just perfect and it went dead center”.

He shared that he knew it was a sure thing when the ball was a mere foot away, already gearing up for his victory celebration.

“I don’t want to celebrate too early because I didn’t feel comfortable but again, you’re not sure until it finally gets in the cup. It was perfect.”

As they reminisced about that fateful day, DeChambeau shared how he managed to stay composed by drawing on his extensive practice. “Here’s a funny thing, when I’m in the heat of the moment and I’m over a putt that’s that important, I just go straight back to my practice,” he confided to Trump.

“It’s all about, ‘What am I doing on the golf green to prepare for that day?’ and whatever I’m sensing and feeling I just solely focus on that. I take all of my willpower, all my focus, and just go, ‘It’s just another four-footer.'”.

Acknowledging the pressure, DeChambeau conceded that being labeled a “choker,” would have been difficult if he had failed to seize the chance to win a major championship. Yet, he successfully translated his practice into performance.
