Owens has previously faced criticism for comments about her relationship. In December 2023, he said on an episode of the podcast “Pivot” that he “didn’t know” who Biles was when they first met on the membership-based dating app “Raya.” And when asked if he considered himself a “godsend” in their relationship, he said: “I always say men are a godsend.” His remarks about being a dig drew the most criticism from fans who pointed out that Owens’ wife is a successful Olympian. Biles has since defended her husband, telling Alex Cooper on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast in April that while she found the wide range of reactions to her husband’s comments amusing, she didn’t necessarily feel that way, noting how hurtful the criticism was. “I thought it was funny at first, and then it hurt,” she said, “And then one night I just started crying and said, ‘Why would you talk about my husband like that?'” Well, you don’t know him. You don’t know who he is. And anybody who’s met him knows he’s a really nice guy and he’ll do anything for anybody. Biles added, “Because for me, it’s like, ‘Say whatever you want about me, but don’t ever ask about my family.’ Because I’ve been in the spotlight long enough to get rid of it and talk about it.
