Golf – From dream to virtual reality, Woods and McIlroy’s indoor golf league hosts its first match

After a year’s delay, the new tech-infused indoor golf league created by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy finally launched Tuesday in Florida under bright lights in prime time, ushering in what organizers hope will be a new chapter for the sport. Unlike the famous atmosphere reserved for a typical golf event, TGL shakes with a DJ that helps maintain a stroboscope light, smoke machine, enthusiastic player presentation, and maintains mood.

The concept of virtual holes did not look like the player lived on the tour. Golfers are playing on active volcanoes, sea rays, desert gorge, mountains in the mountains, and boomerang -shaped fairways. Woods, a 15-time Grand Slam champion, and McIlroy, a four-time Grand Slam champion, did not play in the season opener but attended the event and toured the course in a specially constructed arena that seats 1,500 people.

“It was just a dream born of imagination, and Rory and I have talked about it. I can’t believe this dream is coming true and that I can actually take golf to the next level,” Woods said on the telecast. “Yes, it’s not a traditional golf course, but it’s golf, it’s essential and offers a different type of atmosphere.”

TGL is a virtual and real play hybrid with the participation of the Mic’D UP PGA tour command, and applies images to a five -story simulator screen before switching to a green field.

TRISOMES played an alternative or triple shot in the first session in the nine holes, then went to a single for individual rounds, and each competitors played two complete holes in the last six. After players shook hands, 2019 British Open champion Shane Lowry of The Bay Golf Club realized he forgot his tee and, with a 40-second shot clock ticking, rushed to retrieve one before hitting the first shot in TGL history.

The fast-paced action also featured some unique rules, with Lowry’s team opting to play “The Hammer” early on to double the par-three third’s points value.

Lowry, Wyndham Clark and Ludvig Abverg held a commanding 6-1 lead over New York Golf Club’s Xander Schauffele, Rickie Fowler and Matt Fitzpatrick after the threesomes session before sealing a 9-2 victory.

“It’s absolutely amazing to see this come to fruition,” McIlroy said on the broadcast. The TGL was due to launch early last year but was delayed after the host facility’s inflatable dome was damaged and later replaced with a steel structure.

Woods will make his TGL debut next week at Jupiter Links Golf Club while Northern Ireland’s McIlroy is set to make his first tee time on January 1. 27 at Boston Common Golf.

The virtual hole designs were unlike anything golfers would encounter on tour, making them feel like they were atop active volcanoes, ocean bays, desert canyons, mountain tops and boomerang-shaped fairways. Woods, a 15-time major champion, and McIlroy, a four-time major champion, did not play in the season opener but were in attendance at the event, patrolling the playing area during warm-ups inside the specially constructed 1,500-seat arena.

“It was just a dream, something born of imagination, and Rory and I have talked about it. I can’t believe this dream has come true and that I can take golf to the next level,” Woods said at the televised event. “It’s certainly not traditional golf, but it’s golf, that’s the main thing, and it has a different vibe.”

TGL combines virtual and real-life play, with a team of microphone-equipped PGA Tour players hitting shots on a five-story-high simulator screen, then moving onto a green that rotates 360 degrees to create variety on each hole.
